ABB is turning a complex live stadium into a brownfield proof point for integrated energy and building automation

ABB and Borussia Dortmund expanded their long-running technology relationship into a strategic Energy Management Partnership at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK. The programme combines energy management, electrical distribution, KNX-based building automation, HVAC and planned storage and charging infrastructure through an open, scalable architecture intended to work with the stadium's existing systems and extend across the wider BVB estate.

For operators of large existing estates, the project is relevant because it tests whether energy, electrical and building-control modernisation can be layered onto complex legacy infrastructure without a wholesale rebuild. ABB is using System 800xA in a 30-year nuclear life-extension programme, strengthening its critical-infrastructure automation proof point

ABB was awarded a contract through Ansaldo Nucleare to modernise control and safety systems at Unit 1 of Romania's Cernavodă nuclear power plant. ABB's scope includes the Ability System 800xA distributed control system, emergency-shutdown functions for Category B and C systems, cybersecurity engineering and testing, plus selected Category A standby-generator functions. The programme is intended to support a further 30 years of operation for the unit.

Decision impact

For organisations evaluating long-life automation platforms, this is a meaningful supplier-capability signal because it places ABB's control architecture in a safety-critical, highly regulated modernisation programme where legacy continuity, lifecycle support and cyber controls matter as much as new functionality.
